Shaw Murder Update
A public viewing will be held today for slain Los Angeles High School football star Jamiel Shaw Jr.
The viewing is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Inglewood Park Cemetery 3801 W. Manchester Blvd., said Shaw family spokeswoman Trivia Carter.
A funeral service was scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow at West Angeles Cathedral, 3600 S. Crenshaw Blvd., Carter said.
Shaw, 17, was fatally shot around 8:30 p.m. March 2 in the 2100 block of 5th Avenue.
The investigation into the slaying was continuing and there have been no arrests, said Los Angeles police Officer Sara Faden.
The high school running back was named his team’s and the Southern League’s Most Valuable Player in 2007, and he had drawn recruiting interest from Stanford and Rutgers.
Relatives said he should be remembered as a good example for all young people to follow.
“I’m here to say that he was killed by gang members,” Jamiel Shaw Sr. said about his son’s death. “Maybe he was killed because they thought he was a black gang member, but he wasn’t killed because he was a black man … .”
