Santa Anita Fire
Firefighters are battling flames that broke out in the Santa Anita Canyon in Sierra Madre, Calif., this Saturday.
Working over the weekend firefighters lost ground Sunday night and reported that they had 23-percent containment Monday morning. The fire has consumed 490 acres forcing the evacuation of 1,000 Sierra Madre residents from 400 houses, according to Nathan Judy of the U.S. Forest Service
KNBC.com reports that there are two temporary shelters were set up at Hart Park House, a senior citizen center at 22 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., and the nearby Congregational Church at 170 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. Sierra Madre schools have been closed for the day and firefighters are continuing to battle the flames on the ground and in the air.
Firefighters hope to have full containment of the flames in five to seven days, according to Judy.
